I have an Alliance/Speed Queen top loader washing machine model SWT220WN thats about 5 years old. The other day its started making a load whining and squeeling sound when its running, whether agitating or not.
At first I thought it was the motor or transmission or belt but it feels more like its coming from the drain pump. The sound changes frequency when in different modes (delicate/normal/ final rinse etc). It also makes the noise whether full of clothes or not, and it drains fine. Is that somewhat common thing to make noise like that when it goes?? Thanks!

Hello.
The noise may come from the drain pump, the belt tension/idler pulley, brakes.
With the front off try to locate where it's coming from.
If there is something stock inside the pump it would be noisy. Put a long screw driver to the pump and check if it's making that noise.
You can spray WD40 on the pulley's shaft(not much), than spray a lot into the brakes (at the base of transmission).
See if that will help to illuminate the noise.
Thank you. Post the result.
