We have a XL 1800 GE, when you open the door it sounds like it is running and there is a plastic burning oder. It is still heating. but the whole unit is getting warm to the touch, so I have unplugged it. Can someone please help?

Unplug it, find and replace the bad door interlock micro switches.

Andreah,

Ardvaark is most likely correct in his reccomendation. Your issue is most likely due to a shorted or stuck "primary" interlock switch. There are several door switches involved, and I don't think the microwave is "cooking" with the door open.
With the power cord unplugged, you'll need to remove the top grille cover from the unit, Remove the control panel assembly screw at the top and lower, remove the panel. The door switchs are located on the left of the opening and mounted on a "plastic" bracket, that is removable or adjustable, if needed.

Good Luck,
:) :) :)
