The tub, when spinning or washing a large load, seems to be banging on the sides of the washer. When empty, I can move the agitator/tub quite easily with one hand in any direction. Any ideas what the problem might be, and is it a DIY project?

Is this an expensive fix, or would getting a new one be the better option? I seem to remember spending around $300 for this back in 2007.

Thanks for any input.

Could be a broken suspension spring, counterbalance spring or the suspension plate is out of position. You will need to remove the cabinet to check. There are 3 horizontal suspension springs attaching the tub to the base. There is a vertically placed counterbalance spring in the rear attaching the tub to the base. The suspension plate is positioned between the base and the tub support assembly. If it's out of place, you will need a couple helpers to lift the tub while you reposition it. Check the 3 wear pads on the suspension plate to make sure they aren't broken or severely worn out. There are also 3 wear pads on the top of the base.
