Thanks, I appreciate the follow-up to make sure I did the splice correctly. Yes, I spliced the line in a metal junction box with a cover plate. I actually found a couple other junction boxes in the basement that don't have plates on them. They will be getting plates very soon! Anyway, thanks for the help!

Glad to hear you found it.

You said you had to splice the wire.
Did you also add a electrical junction box at the splice.
If not then the splice does not meet electrical code.

The line is high current and it is not uncommon for connections to fail over time. Doing the splice in a metal junction box diminishes the possibility of a fire if it fails.

I actually figured out the answer shortly after posting my question. We have an older home, and the dryer is wired through an older fuse box using 2 35-amp buss fuses. 1 of the fuses was good, supplying enough power to the dryer to light the display and actually run it for a few minutes, but the 2nd fuse was blown. I replaced the bad fuse and the dryer is now running fine.

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for FAQE7072LW models | AppliancePartsPros.com

Here is a service manual

And finally the tech sheet

Looks like E61 is a heat relay related.
I am not sure exactly what they are monitoring to generate this error.
If it is the temperature change then I would start by checking the power to the unit with a meter. If the 240 volts is missing then this error would pop up.
