If the motor is silent during drain/spin, it's most likely a faulty lid switch.

first off is the motor running during the spin 'cycle'? if it won't drain you may need to check your pump.. if it's not spinning at all it might be the basket drive block.. over time this may wear down.. if it doesn't grip properly, the tub won't spin.. another thing to check if the tub isn't rotating up to speed (or if it's totally worn it won't spin at all during spin cycle) is the clutch assembly.. these are all easy fixes.. just input your model number and find the schematic for your machine.. find the part numbers and do a search on them.. appliancepartspros.com usually has install videos to go along with these parts..

i'm assuming you have typical old style agitator, non computerized, machine like mine.. i'm not familiar with the newer machines that are computerized..
