This problem is driving me nuts, so I'm hoping you guys can help me. It's an electric dryer, and when I start it up, the heating element only stays on for 30-45 seconds.

I figured it was a clogged vent, so I disconnected the dryer from the vent hose, and the same thing still happens. I pulled the top off and jumped the high limit thermostat, and the dryer runs longer than a minute, but the heat in the case rises VERY quickly (at 160 degrees, I just shut it off).

Any suggestions, guys?

Couple of things. Look at the element to see if it's broken or sagged, and grounded out to the housing that it's mounted in. If it is that can create strange symptoms. Also if you're running it without the front in place it can cause the element to cycle on the high limit due to a lack of air flow through the proper areas.

If you have a meter you can check to see what t-stat is shutting it down. When the element fades away, the open t-stat will read 240v across the terminals. Below is a picture of the element in case you end up needing it.

Well, it turns out it was a combination between a loose connection on the heating element and a clogged vent. It took a ShopVac and around 6' of extensions to get the clog in the middle of the pipe out.

It's running great so far. Thanks for the advice!
