Dryer stops during cycle. Wife normally uses timed drying. I listened to timer action and it's quiet. I can push on the timer knob and the timer will activate.....I can hear the faint hum. If it continues, I can start the dryer and it may or may not continue the cycle. Do I need to replace the timer, or are there some contacts I may be able to clean? I promise to unplug it first so I won't get this look on my face: :eek:

Dryer heats normally and there don't seem to be any other problems.

Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL GEC9858EQ0 DRYER | AppliancePartsPros.com

See the attachment for the wiring diagram.

If the timer does this in both timed and auto cycles I would replace the timer as it's motor gets power from different circuit paths depending on the cycle type.
OR
You could measure the voltage across the timer motor. If it is getting 120 volts and hangs up then replace the timer.

Thanks. I'll check the auto cycles and proceed from there. I guess contact cleaning is not an option?

I cannot be 100% sure but it does not sound like a contact problem.
