Whirlpool WGD55560SQ gas Automatic dry never stops

Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: WGD55560SQ
Main Symptom: Automatic dry never stops

Error Code (if any):
Parts or tests already tried: Replaced the cycle thermostat. That didn’t help. Cleaned the exhaust duct, also no help.

Hi Oobleck,

Have you tried cleaning the moisture sensor or checking for a clogged vent? Either of those issues can affect the dryer’s performance.

You may also want to check the timer. Try running the dryer on a Timed Dry cycle. If the timer doesn’t advance or the dryer continues running after the cycle should have ended, the timer may be faulty.

In some cases, it’s also a good idea to check the door switch with a multimeter to make sure it has proper continuity.

Thanks for the quick response. The vents are clean. There’s no moisture sensor inside the drum. As I recall when I bought it, they said it senses the temperature of the hot air leaving the drum to tell how dry the load is. That’s why I replaced the cycle thermostat (AKA bias thermostat), though that didn’t seem to solve the problem. There’s also no thermistor, so I don’t know how it senses the temp. Is that what the bias thermostat is for?

The timer works fine. It runs normally on a timed dry cycle; only the automatic dry is a problem. The door switch also works normally.

As an experiment I tried running automatic dry with nothing in the drum. It ran for about half an hour then went into “cool down”, where the burner would go on and off. Eventually it gave the end of cycle signal and stopped. So it seems to be working now, at least with nothing in it. Next time I do laundry I’ll try it with a load and see if it works.

So, this is the one you have already replaced?

Yes, that’s the one. I ran a couple of loads and it seems to be working normally now. Don’t know why it didn’t right after I changed the thermostat, but hopefully it’s fixed now. Thanks for the help.
