Whirlpool washer mode shift circuit failed

Recently my washer stopped agitating - it fills up, sits quietly for the duration of the cycle, then drains and spins (spin works fine). I took off the front panel and checked the motor light, which is flashing 4 times. The corresponds to ‘washer mode shift failed’, with an action of ‘check mode shifter coil’.
Can I have some information on how to check the mode shifter coil, and also what steps to take based on what I find? Thanks!

The model number you gave is for a Whirlpool direct drive model. It does not have a mode shifter nor a motor with an error light. You describe a GE Hydrowave model, not a Whirlpool direct drive.

You’re absolutely right. I took pictures of the model numbers on a couple different machines, and was looking at the wrong one. Embarassing.

This is actually a GE washer with model # 175d5749p005. The issue is as I stated before. Can we use this thread, or should I start a new one with the right details?

Don’t need a new thread but that’s not a model number, it’s a part number. There should be a label with the machine model number and serial number. A failed mode shifter would not prevent the machine from agitating, it would just cause the basket to go back and forth along with the agitator. The 4 flash does indicate a failed mode shifter though so you probably have a faulty mode shifter and a faulty motor/inverter. A very expensive repair and not worth doing.

Sorry, bought it at a scratch-and-dent a few years ago (new) and had some trouble locating the model number. It’s wjsr4160gww. Just checked on GE’s site, I see it has 1 out of 5 stars, lots of complaints about it being cheaply made. One mentioned the motor giving out after 4 years. You think it will be cheaper to just buy a new washer?

Well, your looking at $332 in parts and who knows how long it will last. Mode shifter and motor/inverter failures are very common in these washers.

Not great news, but thank you for your help.
