What happens & when:Opened the door using the motorized opener. When I tried to close it the white plunger would not retract and door could not close. Unplugged the unit for approx. 15 minutes. Replugged it and the door closed. Reopened it and the plunger stuck open again. When trying the button, there is no noise

I would start by replacing the door motor, W11545873 Turntable Motor | Genuine Whirlpool OEM In Stock, it looks like a turntable motor. Other than that, you would be looking at the control board.

The turntable is working fine.

Manually open the door and put a cup of water in,table turned and the water heated. Would that still be the turntable motor?

That part on our site is saying it is a turntable motor, it just looks like one.
