Whirlpool LSQ9549PW2 washer top agitator only goes one direction, replaced agitator and dogs. What makes it to reverse direction?

Does the bottom half agitate? If so you may need to replace the whole agitator cam kit ( Whirlpool 285809 Washer Short Cam Agitator Repair Kit | Genuine OEM Part )

If not then the agitator ( Whirlpool WP3951632 Washer Lower Agitator | Genuine OEM Part ) itself is stripped where it engages the splines on the transmission shaft

Yes, the bottom agitator works great both directions, I checked the splines on both parts, good connection.

I can twist the top agitator and get the dogs to engage, but when running it only goes clockwise.

Also, noticed it agitates when lid is open, which it didn’t use to do. Could the lid switch be a problem?

It is very possible. If there is an JGRP436HL05 fault in that switch it won’t agitate. And the kind of switch you have is known to fail
