Whirlpool Ice maker fill tube freezing up WRX986SIHZ01

Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: WRX986SIHZ01
Main Symptom: Ice maker inlet tube freezing up
What happens & when: happens after there is a power cycle. I notice that the fridge will just restart on its own and then the ice maker inlet tube will freeze up and I have to run code 19 to start the inlet tube heater for a few minutes and then it will thaw and it will start to make ice again for a few weeks. I noticed it one time when I was getting water from the door, it was filling my cup and then the water stopped and then started again and I heard the sound of the fridge starting up, the sound like when you take it out of service mode. After that it will not make ice anymore, and I see that the inlet tube is froze up and I have to thaw it again.

When the refrigerator power cycles, does the entire unit shut down briefly and then start back up?

Yes, it only happened two times that I caught it, I was filling water from the door and the water stopped for a second and the lights on the control panel blinked and I removed the cup from the lever and then pushed it again and the water started flowing again. I also heard that same noise that I heard when I take it out of service mode, there is a dunk and then a bam bam bam, and that is what I heard. I monitored it for the next day and there was no ice made and no water filled up the ice tray. I then ran the code to start the inlet tube heater for a few minutes, then I ran the ice tray fill up code and water filled the tray, then I shut off the power to the fridge for a couple minutes, then I turned it back on and went into service mode code 38 for short or long defrost mode and set it for long, then set it out of service mode, and I would then get ice for a few weeks, maybe a month or more until one day I notice the ice is smaller in the bin and there is no water in the tray when I reach up in there. I have to do that process all over again and I get ice again for weeks or a month or two. I am just wondering if it needs a control board or power board or what, I don’t want to just throw parts at it. Thank you for the reply.

It sounds like the main control has a glitch. The power board can be tested for 120 Volts AC from the white wire with a black stripe to the black wire with a white stripe at connection P1. Unfortunately, this would be a continuous test to try and identify if 120 Volts AC is present during a power cycle. W10843055 Refrigerator Control Board | Genuine Whirlpool OEM In Stock

Thank you for the help, I think I till try the main control board.

I noticed one more thing today, I heard that sound again like it restarted, the same sound it does when it comes out of service mode. It didn’t make any more ice today, so I turned on the tube heater and thawed the inlet tube, I then ran water into the tray and did not power cycle the fridge, I just took it out of service mode and went to bed, in the morning there was still the water in the try and the cubes in the bin were smaller. I don’t think the freezer part of the ice bin and tray is on, the water in the tray did not freeze all night. I then power cycled the fridge and it has been making ice every hour for the entire day. Could that still be a control board?
