On your Whirlpool GFG471LVS1, the oven door uses locking hinge levers. If the door won’t come off, the hinge locks usually aren’t fully engaged or the door isn’t in the correct removal position.
Try this:
- Fully open the oven door.
- Locate the small locking tab on each hinge.
- Using a small flat-blade screwdriver if necessary, flip both hinge locks completely toward you (away from the oven frame) until they stay in the locked position.
- Slowly close the door until it stops, about 10–15° open (it should not close all the way).
- Grip the door by the sides (not the handle) and lift straight up and toward you. The hinges should slide out of the grooves.
If the hinge won’t release
If one or both hinge locks won’t move or the door still won’t lift off:
- Make sure the door is fully open before moving the locking tabs.
- Apply slight upward pressure on the door while moving the tab with a screwdriver.
- Inspect the hinge for signs of bending or damage. A failed hinge can prevent the lock from engaging.
If the hinge snapped closed
If the hinge accidentally snapped shut while you were trying to remove the door, do not try to force it open with your fingers. The spring is under very high tension and can cause serious injury. In many cases, the hinge can be reset by reinstalling the door on the range, but if it is jammed or won’t reset, the hinge assembly may need to be replaced.
Can you tell me exactly what happens?
- Do the locking tabs move, but the door won’t lift off?
- Or are the locking tabs themselves stuck and won’t flip into the locked position?
I think we got it! If we have other problems I will get back to you.
Thanks so much!
Judi
Hi Jeffrey,
The disassembly went well and now we are at a point where we are stuck with the reassembly. We lowered the interior part of the door over the clips and set the door over the hinges at the bottom. The glass however is not sitting flush on the top 2 corners.
Is it possible to send you a picture? Much thanks!
Yes although we will be closing in about 20 minutes so it may be tomorrow before I can answer
How do I attach a picture?
I thought you closed at 5:00 Pacific Standard time.
Are you still there Jeffrey?
Yes I leave at 6pm eastern
