Brand: Whirlpool
Model: Duet Sport
Main Symptom: Won’t lock/stay locked during cycle
What happens & when: I almost always have to push and hold in the door of my washer immediately after pushing Start, so that it’s held in when the lock mechanism clicks in. Sometimes that’s enough and it’ll continue on its own fine, but usually after it does an initial spin, it unlocks… then locks again (that seems like normal behaviour?) before starting the water flow. If I don’t push, I’ll hear it click every 5s or so, like it’s trying to lock but can’t. Sometimes just pushing it in initially works fine, but other times (especially lately) it literally won’t even stay shut well enough to finish a load, and the cycle will fail mid-wash. From what I can see on the outside there’s no obstruction or anything broken.
My biggest problem, which I can’t emphasize enough, is that I can neither afford a technician nor can I replace it (for monetary and other reasons I’d rather not get into publicly, but suffice to say it is absolutely not an option; I wish it were). So I really need to be able to fix this on my own.
Error Code (if any): no
Parts or tests already tried: I tried to see if I could tighten the screws on the door around the lock and on the handle, but both seemed more than tight enough (even though I was using a standard phillips and they seem to take their own starburst-shaped screws…). No change.
