My gas dryer recently started having problems. It’s a Whirlpool (Kirkland), model number SGDX600JQ2. I think we bought it in 03 or 04. It won’t finish the “auto” dry cycle. The dial doesn’t move at all on the “auto” setting. It still gets hot, so it will dry in the auto setting, but doesn’t turn off by itself. It seems to work fine on the timed dry setting though. There have been a few times since this problem started that I have smelled gas after the dryer has been running for a while. But, after stopping it and starting it up again after 20 minutes or so I don’t smell it again. Anyone have any idea what is wrong with it?
Thanks,
Andrea

Andrea,
In general, if the timer works in timed dry,but not on auto dry, usually indicates a clogged or restricted vent.
But, based on the occassional gas odor, I think you may have a bad set of gas valve coils, When the coils start to get weak, the valve becomes intermittent, and has an irratic ignition procedure.
Good Luck,
