Whirlpool dishwasher makes loud howling noise during wash cycle

The dishwasher started making a loud howling noise during the wash cycle and it is progressively getting louder and louder. Everything on the dishwasher works fine. What part do I need to replace to make this quiet again?

Remove the pump cover and the inlet protector (#8 on the pump & motor break down diagram) and check for a broken glass or any other foreign objects inside.

Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool dishwasher Model GU1500XTLQ2

Gene,

Thank you for your advice. I followed your instructions and did not find any foreign body or anything else that I could see wrong. Still makes that loud noise. Any other suggestions?

Remove the chopper assembly (#6 on the pump & motor break down diagram) and check if it’s not broken. If there is nothing wrong then the motor assembly has to be replaced.

Gene.

Gene,

I will check that next. Is the motor assembly with the last model number digits of Q2 the same as model number Q3 that I have?

Yes, this is the same motor.

Gene.

Gene,

Checked the chopper also and could not find anything wrong, but since I put it all back together, it seems a little quieter. It might just be wishful thinking on my part!! Thanks for all your help. I am sure I will be ordering that part from you soon. You definitely have the best prices.

I have this exact problem and I am looking to replace the motor. How to I get to the motor? Can I get to it from inside the dishwasher or do I have to take the dishwasher out from under the sink and turn it on its side??

Thanks for any help.

Took about 1.5 hours… for a guy who really didn’t know what I was doing. So I am thinking pretty easy DIY job. Gene I owe you big time… if you are ever in central Nebraska I owe you a beer or two… Saved me over $150.

Great advice and fast fast fast shipping from appliancepartspros.com. I will HIGHLY recommend this forum/parts store to others.

Thank you again.

I agree with the previous users on price and shipping. This site was a huge help!

Hello there,

I've been experiencing this same problem for a few months now and its quite bothersome. Though I have not yet checked the pump assembly or the chopper unit (since I just found this post 10 min ago), I'm sure I'll end up replacing the motor anyways. However, after viewing the pump and motor assembly parts list I'm not sure if I'd need to buy the circulation motor or the circulation pump and motor assembly. Also, are any special instructions/tools required to complete this job, or do instructions come with the replacement parts? Thanks for any help.

Ok, so the question is What is the Noise, and why must I replace the motor assembly. I removed everything I could down to the chopper and everything is fine. It is still working. What happens if I don’t replace the motor assembly?
