From what I can tell, the lip is supposed to go up. The original seal was one piece, the new seal(s) appears to be two pieces. WP356427 is the lip seal, wp91939 is the outer dust seal.
The seal WP356427 will go below the outer seal WP91939 during installation. This link has a repair video where it shows the seal replacement process at the 19 minute mark, and is a good reference tool. WP356427 Washer Transmission Shaft Seal | Genuine Whirlpool OEM In Stock
Thank you for the reply WilliamM, you stated exactly what I said in my post, yet somehow still didn’t answer my question. ![]()
Yes, I do know the 427 seal goes below the 939 seal, I actually said that in my post. This is the very video that I watched that made it necessary to come in here to make 100% sure that I was facing the seal lip in the proper direction. His fumbling and bumbling around make it somewhat questionable to someone not versed in this type of work. It vaguely appears the lip is facing up, although logic says the seal lip faces up for a seasoned mechanic. Why wouldn’t he, or you, state the exact orientation of the direction on the lip seal during installation? After all, this IS a critical seal and you only get one chance to make it work correctly. ![]()
I didn’t come in here to criticize, I just wanted to clear it up for the next guy that may not know how seals work. A quick edit on the video and everything is great. BTW, get that man the proper tools and work station to hold the part correctly while he installs the seal so that he doesn’t booger up the job. Good fortune.

The side with the beveled lip will face upwards when installing the seal, and the side with the inner lip and track will face down.
