**Model Number:**VCBF036LSS Main Symptom: Jackhammering noise What happens & when: I noticed that the water flow was slow on my Viking refrigerator water dispenser. When I installed a new filter it started making a loud jackhammering sound while dispensing water. This continued even after flushing the system for several gallons of water. I tried several different brand new filters, including one purchased directly from the manufacturer (not Amazon which apparently has a lot of fakes). On the latest filter, it makes the hammering sound for a little while and then the water flow is a very slow trickle. I can also hear water rushing around in the filter area of the fridge and a slight pulsing sound when water is being dispensed. When I installed the bypass cap, there is no jackhammering sound. In 2018 I replaced the water filter head and tube assembly, so I am wondering if it might need the same thing again? We live in Los Angeles so there is hard water here.
I have been doing some research and I’m not sure if it’s the filter head or the solenoid this time around?

Based on everything you’ve described, I do think the water filter head (filter housing) is the most likely culprit, especially since the problem completely disappears when the bypass plug is installed.
The bypass cap removes the filter and its internal check valves from the water circuit. Since the dispenser works normally with the bypass installed, that tells us the water inlet valve and most of the water tubing are likely okay. The loud jackhammering, pulsing, and eventual trickle are classic signs that the filter head is not allowing water to pass smoothly through the filter.
Because you replaced the filter head back in 2018 and you have hard water, it’s very possible that mineral buildup or a worn internal valve has caused it to fail again.
Here’s the order I would troubleshoot it:
Continue using the bypass cap as a test.
If water flow is strong and steady with no hammering, that strongly points to the filter head assembly rather than the inlet valve.
Inspect the filter receptacle.
Look inside the filter head with a flashlight for broken plastic, mineral buildup, or damaged O-rings.
Make sure the filter locks in fully. If it doesn’t seat completely, the internal valves can chatter and restrict flow.
Measure the household water pressure.
Ideally it should be between 40 and 80 PSI.
Extremely high pressure can sometimes contribute to water hammer, although it would usually affect operation with the bypass installed as well.
If possible, disconnect the outlet tube from the filter head and briefly dispense water into a container (with power disconnected before removing tubing, then restore power only for the test).
A strong, steady flow into the filter head but poor flow through it confirms the restriction is inside the filter head assembly.
At this point, I would replace the water filter head assembly before replacing the water inlet valve. The symptoms simply fit the filter head much better:
No noise with the bypass installed.
Multiple new filters produce the same problem.
Water rushing and pulsing around the filter area.
Flow starts then quickly drops to a trickle.
Hard water can shorten the life of the internal valves in the filter head.
If replacing the filter head does not resolve the issue, the next component I’d test would be the water inlet valve, as a weak valve can occasionally oscillate under the added restriction of a filter. However, based on your description, I’d put the odds at around 90% that the filter head assembly is the source of the problem.
