The motor and fan blade in the freezer compartment looks pretty unstable

GE: GTS17JBSERWW

The motor and fan blade in the freezer compartment looks a bit unstable and wobbles around. I see that the motor stem itself is not steady when the fan blade is turning. There is also noise coming from the fan when it’s on. The freezer section is cold so that’s not the problem. The bottom refrigerator compartment is not as cool as it should be.

Do I need to replace the motor, fan or something else?

GE Refridgerator Fan Issue

Hi mytwoleftfeet,

A lot of the time, this happens when the evaporator fan motor is starting to fail. The black dust you’re seeing around the fan is often residue from the motor wearing out.

If your refrigerator also isn’t cooling very well, that’s another sign the fan motor may not have enough power to maintain proper airflow. Without adequate airflow, the refrigerator won’t be able to keep a stable temperature.

Based on your symptoms, I would suspect the evaporator fan motor is beginning to fail.

Would I need to replace the fan blade and grommet as well?

no just the motor if you were to replace it.
