Main Symptom:Custom Control Switch bad
What happens & when:
I have an electric cooktop, Jenn Air JEC9536ADS, Serial no. 12466425ET, the Custom control switch is bad, I ordered the Whirlpool W10823734 Infinite Switch (Top Burner Control) OEM Part from Appliance Parts Pro.
I have uninstalled my cooktop but I have a few issues/discrepancies with the instructions; the New Element Epic sensor wire is too short and has a different connector type (figure 3), and in the main body of the limiter, the spade connectors are arranged in different positions in the instructions (figures 6 and 9) compared to the new element.
New element, epic sensor connector, the sensor cord is too short, will not reach new wiring harness and it is a different connector type from the one on the wiring harness). How do I connect the new element epic sensor to the wiring harness epic sensor connector? There are two wires that do not have any identifying marks/lines.
The main body of limiter has 3 spade connectors; 1 - 1/4”, 2 - 3/16”; their positions are different than the ones shown in the instructions.
Will the 1/4” red harness wire go to the 1/4” limiter spade connector? Which 3/16” spade connector should the black 3/16” harness wire connector go to?

Instruction Sheet - Limiter wiring Figure 6, shows terminal sizes but no terminal labels, also states the hot light wire connector is red and connector size is 1/4”
New Element Limiter connectors, the 1/4” and 3/16” terminal connectors are in different locations, shows terminal labels (1b, 2a, 2b)
Remaining wires, 2 for wiring harness, red wire with 1/4” connector and black wire with 3/16” connector; and 1 red wire from the hot light indicator with 3/16” connector. This is a conflict with instruction sheet #31/Figure 6 which states the red hot light wire should connect to the 1/4” connector on the limiter?? It appears the connectors for the 2 red wires may need to be changed?
sjschick54, Could you send a picture of the connector on the old epic sensor? Also, looking at the wiring on the limiter, the 2 - 3/16” connectors will go to the left side on the 2 sides there. The larger red wire with the 1/4” connector will go to the right side larger connector.
Also, please get me a picture of the original element front and back and which element is this for, the right front, left front?

So the Instruction Sheet said to connect the red hot light wire which is a 3/16” codnnector, to the 1/4” spade connector on the limiter, but you are saying connect the red 1/4” connector wire from the wiring harness to the 1/4” spade connector on the limiter? Are you sure? That will leave the 3/16” red hot light wire and the black 3/16” wire from the wiring harness, which one goes to a specific terminal, terminal 1b and 2b?
Old element, this element is the right front element as you would face the cooktop, and it is contolled by the Custom Control switch, which is the last switch on the right
So on the wiring, the way that I explained it would be correct because the 3/16” connectors are for the hot surface indicator light. As for the sensor, it does appear that the connector is incorrect but the only way to get this to work would be to cut the connectors off and splice together with ceramic wire nuts. The part that you received is the correct one per the manufacturer parts list.
So I have connected the red 1/4” connector wire from the wiring harness to the 1/4” spade connector on the limiter.
That leaves the 3/16” red wire (coming from the hot light indicator), and the black 3/16” wire from the wiring harness; which one goes to terminal 1b and which goes to terminal 2b on the limiter?
As far as the Epic Sensor, just cut off the connectors, and using the old sensor wire, splice the 2 wires together using ceramic wire nuts. Both of the wires,on the wiring harness and on the Epic Sensor on the new element, appear to be same color, neither one has a unique marking or line so it won’t matter which wire gets connected to which?

As far as the epic sensor, it will not matter which wires are attached to which. For the black wire it would go to 1b and the red will go to 2b.
