Brand: GE
Model Number: gtw460asj7ww
Main Symptom: Won’t Spin with Even Just a Few Towels In It
What happens & when:
I have a GE gtw460asj7ww top loading washing machine with an agitator. It was purchased in 2017 (big mistake).
It has decided that it doesn’t want to spin, but not always. If it’s a very light load, it fills, washes, rinses, spins, and completes its cycles just fine. But if it has as many as four bath towels in it, the following happens:
a) The spin light starts flashing
b) The washer grinds away as though it is trying to drain
c) It stops and goes silent for a minute but the spin light remains flashing
d) It fills back up with water
e) It drains the water again but does not spin
f) It then shuts off, unlocks the lid, and leaves me with a bunch of sopping wet clothes.
I have replaced all four suspension rods, thinking that it might be going out of balance too easily but that made zero difference.
It seems like it has become overly sensitive to any out of balance condition, but none of the YouTube videos mention a balance sensor… drum speed sensor, yes.
What’s next? New main circuit board?
TIA
The first thing to look at is the harness to the speed sensor, which is part of the main harness AP6328333. I would check this to make sure it isn’t damaged or putting the connector to the speed sensor under strain when the machine has a normal to heavy load in it and make sure the wires pins in the connector and the connector itself are fully seated. This is a possibility sense the issue only seems to occur on heavier loads.
If that harness is good this is most likely to be either the speed sensor AP7020336 or the main control board AP8056061. You can usually determine which is at fault using the diagnostic test mode’s Spin test. If the machine will spin for at least 15 seconds in the Spin test in diag mode with the basket empty then you’ve got an issue with the main control software. If the Spin test fails then the speed sensor is at fault.
I’m attaching the tech sheet for this model below to help with the diagnostic test mode.
