POP, then White & Dark Smoke Dishwasher

Help, Bosch dishwasher, maybe 15 minutes into wash I heard a POP, then white and black smoke came out from top… I shut it down, I wasn’t sure if it was on fire… but the only thing that lingered was the smoke smell. Could it be the motor and electric module? How do you get into washer to see the parts?
thanks Jo:(

NOt sure which of these is your unit, but the breakdowns should help you get into it.

1.) Model SHU3302 UC/12 (FD 8003 -)

2.) Model SHU3302 UC/06 (FD 7902-8003)

3.) Model SHU3302 UC/11 (FD 8003-8003)

Thanks does it sound like the motor, or something else?
JO

I would say the motor, but that’s just a guess because we don’t work on Bosch.

Jojersy, we’re u able to diag. your washer? Today my Bosch did almost the same thing. two pops and now totally dead, no power no lite?

Thanks,

Thanks,

From all I read this happens to Bosch dishwashers… The control module seems to need replacing, I’m just worried that it may happen again and start fire? I wrote Bosch, but I don’t know If I get a answer.
thanks JO

I had the very same thing happen on Halloween. Same model, same timing. After removing the door and the facia it was obvious by the burn marks that it was the control module. The original module replaced was part number 268198 which was replaced by 491870. I also replaced the soap dispenser as it would no longer close. The module was easy to replace but about $150. The first part I rec’d appeared used so I called and rec’d a replacement. The replacement part included “re-programming” instructions which were not sent with the first. The only problem is that the code required doesn’t appear. I have called Bosch (very unresponsive) and APP (who suggested I post as they couldn’t help). They sent another replacement (with no re-programmimg instructions this time). The DW works but the soap dispenser will not open. I have posted here and have not seen a response. I wish I would have just replaced the DW.

I had the exact same symptom on my BOSCH SHU3336UC/U12. :(. My wife went to the parts store and they sold her a ‘491870’ controller… buy no one said anything about programming it. I am about to put the part into the dishwasher but now I wonder if I should wait… Have you heard back on the programing?

JAN 25 '09 UPDATE: BOSCH ISSUED A PRODUCT RECALL ON THIS!!

I just got a recall notice from Bosch on this problem!! The letter describes it as:
"Bosch has found that an electrical component in the dishwasher’s control panel can overheat and potentially catch fire. In some cases, the dishwasher fire has caused damage to surrounding cabinet walls and counter tops. No injuries have been reported "
The full Letter is attached below.

The impacted model numbers must begin with:
SHE43C, SHE44C

SHE46C, SHE56C

SHU33

SHU42

SHU432

SHU43C, SHU53C
If you have one of these you should probably call them at 800-856-9226.

The letter offers to send a repairman to replace the part. I called and told them I had the part smoke/burn on me and already replaced it. It looks like I am going to be refunded the price of the part.

UPDATE: 1/28/09: I just got a call from Bosch. The new part: 491870 is ALSO under recall. They asked me not to use the DW and want to send a repairman out. So… if you have replaced your controller with a ‘491870’…you still need to follow up with Bosch and get it replaced.

Cheers

Guys,

As far as I know the replacement control board for Bosch dishwasher does not need any programming. The only important thing is if there is a jumper wire on the old board then this wire has to be moved to the new board.

Gene.

Thanks Gene!
I did not see a jumper on the old board…

I tried to program the 491870 board but just like others, I could not get the right code (The instructions said I needed a zero code)

BTW: The instructions for the 491870 are posted at:
http://www.servicetechhelp.com/public/instructions/BSH491870.pdf

So… I installed it. It seems to be working (including the soap dispenser)
I will keep checking back to see if anyone has learned anything more.

thanks everyone for the help!

I guess I am Good

That came out wrong. I meant to say “I guess my dishwasher is good”

PRYGAARD,

Thanks for this information. This instructions has been issued in September and I have not replaced this board for more than five months. Thats why I did not know about it.

Gene.

I just had a bad burning smell from my Bosch dishwasher and it was the WIRING connection behind the kick panel! Just need a torx driver to open the black kick-panel under the door and on the right is your little electrial junction box. Look for blackening, melting, stick your nose in there. Any doubts, pull out the wires and cut 'em back a bit to fresh shiny wire and reterminate with new wire lugs. TURN THE BREAKER OFF FIRST - in your breaker panel, and measure the wires with an AC Voltmeter to make sure they’re dead before you do this! But that was all that was wrong with mine! Idiot who installed it was sloppy and the stranded wire wasn’t fully in the wire-nut. When you re-do it, strip TWICE as much stranded on the DW side as solid on the house side and make SURE the stranded part is FULLY within the nut as you tighten it, or do what I did and SOLDER the connections before you put new wire-nuts on there! -Phil

Thank you for this very useful information.

The repair guy came out today and replaced the board. It only took 15 min. He said that they are having to fix 500,000 Dishwashers! (I am still waiting on the refund for the part I installed)
