I am a HVACR tech and I’m trying to understand the operation of this new GE side by side refrigerator I bought for my house. Only a week old. It is a in the door twist type ice maker part # WR29x49018. I don’t understand why my Smart IQ app says the ice maker is full and the ice isn’t up to the plastic level bar yet?? After watching the operation, this is what I think is happening. At the same time the tray starts to turn the plastic level bar comes down, if it hits ice on the way down it reverses and doesn’t drop ice. If it would come down and not touch ice, it would dump. Am I correct? I thought this bar was like most ice makers and as the ice gets higher it lifts the bar which closes a switch.

Let me know! It’s driving me crazy.

So after a lot of searching on YouTube, finally answered my own question. Maybe this will help someone else out. It does exactly what I thought. During a normal cycle, the tray will start to spin and at the same time the arm comes down to feel if there’s ice in the tray if the tray is full with ice, the arm will come back up and the tray will not spin. If the bin is empty, or in need of ice, the tray will spin, the arm will come down, if it doesn’t feel ice, the tray will twist and empty the ice cubes and the arm will come back up. The tray will then come back to its normal position, then will fill with water. Once the sensor on the bottom of the tray reaches a certain temperature, it will start the process all over again.
