Hi,
Have an older Maytag Refrig. The freezer side builds up ice on the inside bottom until it eventually spills out the door. Looks like the drain in the aluminium catch tray at the bottom of the coils gets frozen and the water can’t drain. Freezer and refrig sides maintain temp fine. Snaked the drain hose and its clear.
Thx.
This is really risky on a defrost heater like yours, ecause of the glass casing. On some heaters, you can (gently) loop a length of copper wire around the heater, and feed the end of it into the drain tube. This way, the heat is conducted into the drain during defrost, and it is less likely that the water will refreeze in the drain.
Ok, thx I can try this, but it never used to do this. Is possibly the heater losing its heat capability or it not staying on long enough?
That certainly is something to check out.
Hi
I have been dealing with this issue myself for a couple of years. I had done all of the sugestions on the web. This time I pulled the frige and took the back cover off the motor area and looked inside. A couple of Items I found. One the tube that drains the water has a 90deg bend right at the fitting. I had almost pushed this off over the years of trying to clean it. I added a hose clamp to prevent this from coming off. I also noticed something while I had my wife pour water into the drain pipe. This water would hold back and then let loose. Further investigation showed the tube is clamped just before bend up against the top of the motor cavity. This brings the pipe above the elbow. almost acting like a P-trap. The problem I believe I am haing is if during the defrost the water does not completely drain from the elbow area it will freeze at the elbow.
What I did was remove the clamp from the tube and lowered it so the bend is lower then the elbow. I used some heavy duty tape to secure it so the end stays in the drian pan. the water know completely drains from the tube. I believe this will fix the problem permanently. I have attached pics to show What I did. hope this helps.
