Maytag microwave won't clear 0:00 time when opening and closing door

Main Symptom: 0:00 doesn’t clear when opening and closing door
What happens & when:

When the microwave cooking timer expires, door is opened and closed, the display reads “complete check food 0:00” until you press the stop/cancel button. Is there a way to change that functionality for the display to go back to the clock without pressing stop/cancel?

Have you had to press cancel the whole time you have used this or is it something new that just started? Any preference changes should be in the owners manual if it can be changed, if not, it is just the way it was programmed by the manufacturer
