Since the display powers up normally but the drum will not start, the problem is usually in the safety circuit or the drive system rather than the incoming power.
Most likely causes (in order)
-
Broken or slipped drive belt (Most Common)
-
This model has a belt switch that will prevent the motor from running if the belt breaks or comes off the idler pulley.
-
Remove the top or front panel and inspect the belt for damage and proper routing around the idler pulley and motor pulley.
-
Failed belt switch
- With the belt installed and tension on the idler pulley, test the belt switch for continuity with a multimeter. It should read close to 0 ohms (continuity) when the belt is tight. If it remains open, replace the switch.
-
Faulty door switch
-
Failed thermal fuse
-
A blown thermal fuse can also prevent the motor from running.
-
Disconnect power, locate the thermal fuse on the blower housing, and test it for continuity. It should read 0 ohms. If it is open, replace the fuse and inspect the exhaust vent for restrictions, as poor airflow is the most common cause of a blown fuse.
-
Drive motor
- If all of the safety switches and the thermal fuse test good, verify the motor is receiving 120 VAC when the Start button is pressed. If proper voltage is present but the motor does not run, the motor is likely defective.
-
Main control board
- If the motor never receives voltage and all switches test good, the main control board or motor relay may not be sending power to the motor.
Quick test
When you press Start, listen closely:
-
No sound at all: Most likely a door switch, belt switch, thermal fuse, or control board issue.
-
A hum for a few seconds: Most likely a seized motor or something preventing the drum from turning.
-
A click only: The control is trying to start the dryer but a safety device or the motor circuit is preventing operation.
A couple of questions that will help narrow it down:
-
When you press Start, do you hear nothing, a click, or a hum?
-
Can you rotate the drum by hand? It should turn smoothly with a little resistance.
