Kitchenaid refrigerator side is good but freezer side not freezing

Brand: KitchenAid
Model Number: KSC24C8EYY02
Main Symptom: Freezer side bad
What happens & when: The refrigerator side on my unit is cooling fine. The freezer side does not freeze. The freezer side evaporator coil near and around the BI-METAL switch is freezing but the remainder of the coil is staying warm to the touch. The freezer side evaporator fan runs continuously.

Error Code (if any): None

If the compressor is running continuously, the condenser coils are clean and the condenser fan runs, this would be a sealed system issue based on the information provided. Unfortunately, this is something that would require an EPA-certified technician to repair.

I have a thought experiment. Since my freezer compartment is never reaching a cold temperature, the system is always driving the evaporator fan on in an attempt to cool. But the fan is not enough to cool since the evaporator is not getting cold. My thought is the evaporator coil is not getting the refrigerant to flow through it maybe due to a bad solenoid valve that is suppose to divert some coolant to the freezer evaporator coil. The compressor also stays on because the system never reads a correct cold temperature. What do you think?

Since the freezer evaporator coil is freezing as far as to the bi-metal, some freon is reaching the system. Since the unit is running continuously but not reaching temperature, the most I would be able to say at this point would be that there is a sealed system failure.

Could you describe an example of a “sealed system failure“. I don’t believe there is a coolant leak since the refrigerator side is still cooling fine.

There could be a partial restriction in the sealed system, which can result in partial frost patterns.
