Main Symptom: starts again when bang near controls
it works awhile and then stops.
wont come back on unless I bang
near the controls. few weeks ago smelt
like a rubber/plastic burn smell.
not sure if cold control is bad or
relay is bad or defrost timer is bad.
please help
That could be the cold control thermostat AP6006166 sticking open or the defrost timer AP5985208. If you can catch it in a failed state and access the defrost timer, take a voltage reading from the orange wire to the white wire(Neutral) and/or a bare metal machine screw(Chassis Ground) , should be about 120v AC.
If that voltage is not present you’ve most likely got a bad thermostat, especially if you bang on the thermostat then recheck the voltage and find it now present.
If voltage is present when it is in a failed state then you are looking at the defrost timer.

AH, Thank you for the help. I dont have a multimeter and have never checked voltage before. when it was not on I tried to turn the defrost timer clockwise till I heard a click sound but fridge did not come on. I had to band the controls so it leads me to believe it may be the cold control unit?
Yeah, I would start with that cold control thermostat.
