Kenmore 665.13833K600 does not drain completely at times

Main Symptom:Doesn’t finish draining
What happens & when:Now happening more frequently that it is not draining fully. However, on depressing “Cancel/Drain” it drains fully. Water does come out of drain hose pretty rapidly. Is this a float valve or some other issue? Pump sounds fine, but is 16 years old.

With the age of your dishwasher, I suspect the drain pump may be starting to fail. Since it works sometimes, it’s possible the pump is overheating. When that happens, it may not have enough power to drain all of the water out completely.

Before replacing the drain pump, I’d also recommend checking a few other things:

  • Check the drain hose and drain path for any blockages from the sump to your home’s plumbing.
  • Make sure the garbage disposal knockout plug was removed (if the dishwasher was recently installed).
  • Inspect the sump check valve and drain loop check valve for any restrictions or if they’re stuck.
  • Check the drain hose for clogs or kinks.
  • Unplug the dishwasher and test the drain pump motor windings for continuity, and inspect all wiring connections to the drain pump.
  • Remove the drain pump and check the impeller. Try pulling and rotating it. If the impeller pulls off easily or spins freely with little resistance, it’s stripped and the drain pump will need to be replaced.
  • Verify that the drain hose is the correct diameter. A hose that’s too small can also cause draining problems.

Based on your symptoms, I still believe the drain pump is the most likely culprit, especially if it’s draining intermittently.
