Main Symptom: Door locks, countdown timer starts, but machine sits in dead silence and won’t fill or start the cycle.
What happens & when: All of the buttons and everything on the washing machine seem to work as expected until I click Start. When I click Start, no matter which cycle I choose, it locks the door and never seems to start it. Usually, it fills water almost instantaneously or at least it starts to fill water almost instantaneously. I let it sit here for about 5 minutes and it never did anything. If I press stop once estimated time remaining starts flashing, I can still press most buttons, but I cannot turn the dial. If I press stop or power, that’s when “add a garment” starts flashing. This exact freeze behavior was happening prior to attempting any component repairs or disassembly.
Error Code (if any): None. If left completely alone for over 5 minutes, it continues to sit frozen on the countdown screen without ever displaying a fault code (no FH, no F20, etc.).
Parts or tests already tried:
24-Hour Reset: The washer was left entirely disconnected from power for 24 hours to clear the board memory, but the behavior remained identical upon plug-in.
New Door Latch Assembly: Replaced the door latch unit entirely with the factory part. The lock-and-freeze symptom behaves identically on both the old and new latch.
New Door Boot Bellows: Replaced the rubber door boot around the same time. (I did this because it was moldy, highly doubt it’s related).
CCU Visual Inspection: Removed the top panel, unlatched the Central Control Unit (CCU) from the right-hand chassis wall, and opened the plastic casing. A close visual inspection of the back of the green printed circuit board shows it is completely pristine, no blown traces, no black scorch marks, and no melted solder joints around any of the internal relays.
Given what I’ve done so far, what’s next to test? Do you think it can be fixed?
Yes, I think it can still be fixed. Based on the symptom pattern, I would not be focusing on the door latch anymore.
For a Whirlpool-built Kenmore front-load washer like 110.47532603, the startup sequence is generally:
Press Start
Door locks
CCU verifies door lock circuit
Drain pump may run briefly
Water valves energize and filling begins
Flow meter / pressure switch report water movement
Your machine is making it through step 2 but appears to stall before step 5.
Most likely suspects
1. Pressure Switch / Pressure Hose
A failed pressure switch or a plugged pressure hose can falsely tell the CCU that the tub is already full.
When that happens:
Door locks normally
Timer starts counting
No water enters
Washer sits seemingly frozen
Check:
Small rubber hose running from the tub to the pressure switch.
Remove hose and blow through it.
Make sure the air trap on the tub isn’t clogged with soap residue.
Inspect for pinholes, kinks, or splits.
2. Flow Meter
This model uses a flow meter between the inlet valves and dispenser.
Normally a bad flow meter causes:
Fill starts briefly
Then FH/F20 appears
However, I’ve seen some Whirlpool-built units stall at startup when the flow meter circuit is completely open.
Check:
Wiring connector at the flow meter.
Resistance of the flow meter sensor.
Harness continuity back to the CCU.
3. Failed Water Valve Circuit
Even if the valves themselves are good, the CCU must energize them.
With a meter:
Start a cycle and check whether 120 VAC appears at the inlet valve coils during the first minute after pressing Start.
Results:
120 VAC present
Bad valve
Restricted water supply
Mechanical issue in fill path
0 VAC present
CCU isn’t commanding fill
Pressure switch input problem
Harness issue
CCU failure
4. Broken Wire Harness
Since you recently had the machine apart, double-check every connector:
CCU connectors
Pressure switch connector
Flow meter connector
Valve connector
A partially seated connector can produce exactly this symptom.
5. CCU Failure
Even though the board looks perfect, that does not rule it out.
On these Whirlpool/Kenmore units, the CCU relays frequently fail with:
No burn marks
No visible damage
No fault codes
The machine simply locks the door and waits forever because the fill relay never closes.
The very next thing I’d do
Run the built-in diagnostic test mode.
For this model:
Machine in standby (all indicators off).
Select any one button except Power/Start.
Press that same button:
3 seconds ON
3 seconds OFF
3 seconds ON
3 seconds OFF
3 seconds ON
The display should enter service diagnostics and show stored fault codes.
Even if no code appears during normal operation, diagnostics often reveals:
F/H (water fill)
F20
F21
F22
Pressure switch faults
If diagnostics won’t enter or won’t run component tests, that becomes a strong clue pointing toward the CCU.

If you have a multimeter, the fastest path forward is:
Enter diagnostics and retrieve any stored codes.
Measure whether the inlet valve receives 120 VAC when a cycle is started.

1. Pressure Switch / Pressure Hose: I disconnected the tube at the switch and blew through it. It is entirely clear of blocks or kinks and bubbles freely into the tub.
3. Water Valve Voltage: I unplugged the wire connectors and tested the electrical terminals directly during the silent period after hitting Start. One valve connector read 23.19 VAC and the other valve connector read 19 VAC. Neither reached 120 VAC.
Service Diagnostics: I attempted the diagnostic button sequences from a powered-down standby state. The machine does not respond to the button combinations and does not enter the test mode.
Update: I just reran the test to ground using a bare chassis screw. Here are the exact voltage results for each individual pin on the disconnected water valve plugs during the start cycle:
White Valve Plug:
Left Pin to Ground: 121.4 VAC
Right Pin to Ground: 28.20 VAC
Line voltage is fully present on one side of both plugs, but the neutral return side is not completing the circuit.
Another strange behavior I noticed: If I start a cycle normally, let it sit in that silent freeze, and then physically unplug the washer from the wall and plug it right back in, it will suddenly kick off the cycle and start working exactly like it’s supposed to. If that makes sense.
What do these voltage readings combined with that power-cycle behavior indicate to you? What would cause that?
100%, when I do the unplug and plug back in behavior, that I mentioned previously, I can hear it fill. Towards the end of the cycle it will still fail though and freeze up, with 2 minutes always left on the time. I think it’s the control board as well, but needed a sanity check. For the price of a new, or even a cheap non-OEM control board (it looks to be around $200 still), it may just be time to find a decent used one from a scratch and dent store, or somewhere.
