Jen-Air JES9860CAS02 Fan / display issues, oven shutting off when hot

Please make sure to click on General above and select the correct appliance type first.

Brand: Jen-Air
Model Number: JES9860CAS02
Main Symptom: Initially the fan button would cause a “High / Low / Warming Drawer” on the display, but everything worked. Smelled a burning plastic smell, shut off breaker.
What happens & when:

Have a JES9860CAS02 oven that has been acting up a bit. First, hitting the fan buttons on the control panel would bring up a “High”. “Low” option, then also display a “Warming Tray” on the panel. When the oven heats up, it will intermittently shut off. Flipping the breaker off / on would temporarily fix the fan and display issue, but it starts back up when the oven warms. I initially suspected the control panel where all wiring connects to, but upon disassembly, I am seeing the LED panel has what looks like a couple charred marks on it. I noticed a smell last week when this started, but that went away after I turned the breaker back on, so I am theorizing that was the smell. Now I am wondering if it’s the LED display panel itself and not the actual control board. Can you help? Oven is off and already pulled apart.

Error Code (if any): No specific error - LED display acting up, displaying “Warming Drawer” when fan button pressed.
Parts or tests already tried: Breaker flipped off / on fixed the display temporarily. When the oven heated up again, the issue returned and the oven intermittently shuts off.

The control panel AP4568115 could be the issue, those char marks lean that way. If the keypad is failing it may be causing low voltage drag on the main control AP6012769.

This is one of those situations where there isn’t much testing that can be done, so I’d start with the control panel to see if that resolves the issue. If it doesn’t then you problem is probably with the control board.

That was my thinking also regarding the char marks and the smell. Nothing is burnt up on the control board itself, but it’s obvious on the panel.

Regarding the low voltage drag thing - could the faulty control panel cause the oven to turn off intermittently? It was 100% happening last night when the oven would hit the mid 300 degree mark. Once it was there, the oven would not stay on. This definitely worsened in the past week or so, since the only initial symptom was the fan / display oddity, then the smell.

One more question about the parts you linked. I understand this is the control board - but the photo also seems to include the control panel that I am referring to. Is it just pictured for clarity and the control board itself is the one behind the plastic fixture, where all the wires connect to?

That’s actually a pretty classic low voltage drag symptom, the intermittent shutting down. That drag confuses the main board and it doesn’t know what to do.

The control is just the control by itself, the diagram shown on that page is for a different unit that uses the same control board, but the control panel w/ the keypad/overlay and the main control board come separately.

Okay, sorry if I am missing something here….I looked up the part number on the control panel link you sent, which is W10314420. That seems to be the stainless cover control panel itself?

The part that I am referring to, which has an obvious char mark on the front and back, is the one pictured in the first photo here: WP8507P234-60 Oven Control Board | Genuine Whirlpool OEM In Stock

I’ve uploaded a photo of it here too, just to be certain.

Then you have a damaged control board. The panel is supposed to come with an overlay/keypad membrane, which is what I thought you meant was charred.

Ahh, my mistake there. I’ll order the control board now and post back when I replace it. Thank you so much!!

Okay, so I got a control board and swapped it out….

When I first turned the breaker back on, the LED display read “EE 214 M 214” - which I understand is an error between panel and board. It cleared when I hit cancel and while the functions seem to work (stovetops, oven, etc), the dreaded “Warming Drawer” error is back as soon as you hit the fan button.

This would lead me to believe my issue is in fact the control panel itself and the ribbon cable going from panel to board also has what may be a char mark - was hard to distinguish between that and just old grease or something.

Does it sound feasible the issue is likely the panel at this point? Just would like another opinion before I spend another $200…

Thanks!
