How do i figure the problem and how to remove evaporator cover to see if coil is frozen up. Do i have to remove the ice maker to do that as it appears?

To remove the evaporator cover on your GE TFX28PBDAWW:

  1. Unplug the refrigerator or turn off power at the breaker.

  2. Empty the freezer and remove the ice bin, shelves, and any baskets that block access to the back panel.

  3. If equipped, remove the ice maker by disconnecting the wire harness and removing the mounting screws so it doesn’t interfere with the cover.

  4. Remove the 1/4-inch hex-head screws securing the evaporator cover to the back wall of the freezer.

  5. Starting at the bottom, pull the cover toward you. If it feels stuck, gently work around the edges with a plastic putty knife. It may be held in place by a foam gasket or a little frost, so don’t force it.

  6. As you pull the cover away, disconnect the evaporator fan motor wire harness attached to the back of the cover.

  7. The evaporator coil, defrost heater, defrost thermostat, and drain trough will now be accessible for inspection or testing.
