Main Symptom: motor won’t shut off
What happens & when: I unplug it, wait, plug it back in and the motor still runs, basket doesn’t turn. First time I heard it, it went on by itself and stationary tub had a few inches of water in it. After I unplugged it and plugged it back in, motor still ran, basket still not moving. Kept it unplugged.

There was no cycle. I came in from outside and I heard the washer motor. I knew I didn’t put anything in the washer so why it became possessed is beyond me.

Since the motor starts running immediately whenever power is restored, even with the washer idle, this is almost always a control problem or a motor drive problem rather than a mechanical transmission issue.

Most Likely Causes (in order)

  1. Failed main control board (Most Likely) ( GE WH22X38438 Washer Main Control Board | Genuine OEM Part )
  • The control board contains the motor relay/triac.
  • If it fails shorted, it will continuously power the motor as soon as the washer is plugged in.
  • This is a common failure on GE top-load washers.
  1. Shorted motor ( GE WH03X29559 Washer Motor And Mounting Nut | Genuine OEM Part )
  • A partially shorted motor can sometimes draw current continuously and prevent normal operation.
  • Less common than the control board.
  1. Damaged wiring harness
  • A rubbed-through wire between the control and motor could be keeping the motor energized.
  • Inspect the harness underneath the washer for pinched or damaged wires.
  1. Failed mode shifter/splutch
  • This would explain why the basket doesn’t move, but it would not cause the motor to run continuously by itself.
  • Therefore this is lower on the list.

Quick Test

With the washer unplugged:

  1. Remove the front service panel or tilt the washer back.
  2. Locate the motor connector.
  3. Disconnect the motor from the wiring harness.
  4. Plug the washer back in.

Results

If the control immediately tries to run the motor (you may hear a relay click or the washer may act like it’s running) with the motor disconnected:

  • The main control board is defective.

If reconnecting the motor is the only thing that causes the problem:

  • Suspect the motor.

Also Check

Because you mentioned there were a few inches of water in the tub when this first happened:

A couple of questions:

  1. When the motor is running, do you hear a smooth electric motor hum, or is it making a grinding or ratcheting sound?
  2. Does the drain pump run at the same time, or is it only the drive motor that is running?

The sound is smooth. First time it drained about 3" of water. After I unplugged it and then plugged back in, no water came out.

I think you may be hearing the drain pump running not the actual drive motor

My son in law found the skematics in the washer, but he’s not understanding the fault chart. Doesn’t know how to access the consumer fault mode, please advise.

Entry into Consumer Fault Mode ������������������������������������������������������ • Cycle knob should be in 12 o’clock position, then • Press and hold Start button for 10 seconds • After holding the Start button for 10 seconds, all LEDs will turn on, signifying the user may release the button and the machine will boot into CFM Behaviors

yes, that’s the paper. Son in law may have fixed it. Not sure what he did, but he was able to get the board to behave. I just put in a load so will have to wait to see if it completes normally. Will advise. In the meantime, thank you for your help and direction.
