GE Cafe French Door FF Evap Coil Freezing

Basically, we’ve now replaced every part of the defrost system for the fresh food section. Still, the Fresh Food evap is getting encased in ice after a couple of weeks. I will note that service mode shows the Freezer evap thermistor at an “impossible” ~ 650 degrees F. Service tech does not believe that can’t lead to the Fresh Food evap freezing. Is it possible the logic is tied together and thus never triggering defrost of the fresh food section? The fresh food thermistor also shows 65-70 degrees often. We replaced the fresh food thermistor again but the old one passes the ice water test. Manually activating the defrost cycle shows it works.

What is the world is going on here?

Brand: GE
Model Number: CYE22USHESS
Main Symptom: Fresh Food Evap Coil Freezes
What happens & when: After approx 2-3 weeks, the coil freezes and temps become erradic

Error Code (if any): Freezer evap thermistor showing ~ 650 degrees F via diagnostic mode. Fresh Food thermistor also shows around 65-70 when encased in ice.
Parts or tests already tried: We’ve replaced the heating element, fresh food thermistor, tested the bimetal sensor, and changed the control board. We can manually trigger the fresh food defrost (via service menu) and it does heat up.

Quick update.

While the fresh food evap thermistor tested ok, we replaced again anyhow. Now that sensor reads about 35 and the freezer evap thermistor reads ~ 650 still.

Is your display showing 0650 when you run the freezer thermistor test? If so that means it is reading at 6.5°F, which would make sense if you aren’t having issues with the freezer section. What # thermistor tests are you running in diagnostic mode?

No, it’s actually close to 650 degrees. See attachment. I will not that it’s intermittent. I just looked and it’s 10 degrees at this moment. It was like 649 last night.

This is test 28 for the freezer. Running 26 for fresh food.

I guess you using this tech sheet? [

I had found the service manual which has that same info, yes.

I’m planning to test the freezer evap thermistor via the wiring going to the main board. If bad, I’ll replace. Technician says that could impact the fridge but we shall see.

Update

I cut power and test the evap thermistor directly at the wires running to the main board. Nominal at ~ 32 kOhms (~10 degrees F).

After plugging the fridge back in, I enter diagnostic test 28 and watch the evap thermistor at a normal value of 10 continue to drop (presumably with the coil cooling down)… it kept dropping until it hit 0.0 then the next value show was ~ 650 degrees F again.

What does that mean? Appreciate any help from the pros!
