I have the same problem with my Frigidaire Frost Free upright freezer as in the forum. The top food was defrosting while the bottom was frozen solid. I emptied the freezer and found ice on the evaporator cover. I removed the cover and there was ice covering the coils. I defrosted the whole freezer to where the ice was gone. I plugged it back in and I see the evaporator fan is running. It seems like the defrost cycle was running because we have seen the green light was solid on the ground outside the freezer and then at other times it has been blinking.

I don’t have a multimeter or feel confident in using one. Do I need to call a repairman or should I wait and see what happens once it’s been running for awhile again. The freezer was bought and delivered in July 2024. I don’t want to pay a lot for repairs as we’ll be moving in 6 months to a condo where we can’t use the freezer anyway.

This has been happening off and on for a few days where sometimes the food on top is defrosting and then it seems to freeze solid again. I did have a lot of bread and buns on the top shelf which might have affected the circulation. Could this have caused the problem?
Is there a chance that defrosting it (and then removing some of the food that was blocking the vent) might solve the problem?

I just wonder why the defrost bi-metal thermostat or the heater element would go bad in less than two years.

If I can buy a part to fix the problem, I’d be glad to do that. I just don’t want to have to pay $300-400 for a repairman to come and do the same thing.
