freezer coil turns red hot

There is one note of caution about the defrost heater.

It should turn off when the ice/frost has melted off the evaporator coils.
The defrost thermostat should open killing power to the heater.

One way to check this is to put some ice cubes in a bowl in the freezer.
If they are all frozen together after a couple days then too much heat is being generated by the heater.
The defrost thermostat is the most likely culprit.

Wi this kick on if I have too much stuff shoved toward the back? Like it thinks it’s ice buildup or something?

Yep.. me too. Luckily this was the 1st place I came to (after putting on safety Goggle’s to get a better look AND checking the battery on my fire alarm). Bookmarking this site.

Only an idiot would put a set of red hot coils in a freezer!!!

Omg thank God I just read all this comments that just happen to my fridge my son came to me woke me up saying the fridge is coughing on fire something was red hot and sound like sparkling I just unplugged it and text my landlord at 1:23 am lol now I have to text him back to say never mind , but thank God is normal I don’t wanna go through the process of getting another fridge, thank you so much guys !

Thank you. 15 years later and same issue

So happy I found this. Never in 55 years have I seen the freezer glow red - freaky and unsettling. Interesting how it happened to many of us at night. Thanks all for peace of mind at 10pm.

So they ARE supposed to be RED hot? I saw something that said they weren’t WHICH IS IT I’M TRYING NOT TO :skull::sob::joy:

Not an issue - normal operation by design.

Thank goodness for this site; this knowledge is old enough to drive and it still helping to assuage my fear that my fridge is broken.

Ok so it is a normal process of the freezer, in my case I get a puddle of water leaking from the freezer. Any solutions to stop water leaking out?
