My Kennmore Elite Dryer Will Only Run While You Hold In The Start Button. Let Go Of The Button And It Stops Immediately.

bad motor for sure
For Sure !!
Do not buy a new motor yet!!! If holding the start switch in, and the motor runs fine without drawing excessive current ( like over 8 amps) you have a good motor. If the motor start switch fails to switch to the run winding, you would hear a louder than normal motor hum!! Then smoke!!
just curious how this worked out ?
You do have a relay in the console. I would check that 1st. Most whirlpool(kenmore) motors are pretty good. The relay # is AP3037419..wrench:)
does drum turn when motor is running .if it does then its motor for sure
whirlpool dryer same as kenmore problem =push start it operates let go it stops. how do i fix thanks joe s

Hi niggdj
Most likely the problem with you dryer is a bad control board.
Normally it should sense the start of the motor and it does not. I’ve seen it many times before.
- The part number for the control board is AP4319168
Good luck.
Gene.
I had the same problem with my dryer. Checked all the diagnostics that came with the dryer and everything was O’K. Replaced the circuit board and the dryer still would not run without holding the button in. Just for the heck of it switched the motor relay with the heat relay and the dryer ran without holding the button in. The continuity test showed the relay to be in working order and it wasn’t. {text removed by admin, reason: site policy} Hope this helps you out. Karen
