Dryer wont start just humms

For the last couple weeks my dryer just hummed when you pushed the starter and then it would start. Now it just quit working. I bought a used dryer off of craigs list last night and it’s doing the exact same thing. Please tell me this isn’t just bad luck. Can there be a problem with my 220 outlet because this new dryer looks like new and I can’t imagine that both dryers have the same problem.

Yes it could be low power you will have to check it.

Try flipping the breaker off/on slowly a couple times, sometimes you can loose half the line without actually tripping the breaker.
If this does nothing, check the voltage at the plug
L1 to L2 should be 240 volts
L1 to Neutral and L2 to Neutral, both should be 120 volts.
Usually the L1 (black) to Neutral (white) is power for the motor
If OK
Unplug the unit and check the wires at the terminal strip in the machine to make sure none are loose or burned out
If OK
Check the power at the terminal strip.
Be careful as 240 volts is lethal !!!

If the power measures OK. Then measure the L1 side when someone else starts the unit to see if the voltage drops. Best to have a second person start it as you want to concentrate on the meter leads so you do not get a shock or an arc/spark.
