Dryer won't start but hear a buzzing noise

My dryer won’t start but I hear a buzzing noise every time I push the start button. Can anyone help?

Can you tell us where the buzzing noise is coming from, and does it stay on as long as you hold the start switch on?

It sounds like its coming from the motor. And it does stay on as long as I hold down the start button. The motor is free moving and so is the blower wheel. Thanks for the help

Ok, good (well maybe not too good, let’s see)

What I would like you to do is to open the door and have someone hold in the door switch while you press the start button and turn the drum with your other hand. If the dryer starts up then your motor will need to be replaced.

Let us know how this works out and if the dryer still does not start we will have some other ideas.

Hey, first post on here and don’t mean to thread jack but I’m having the exact same problem. I have one question in regards to sidfink43’s post on how to test if the motor is bad. I was wondering which way am I suppose to turn the drum- clockwise or counterclockwise? I believe when my dad had this dryer before me he replaced the cycling thermostat and the thermal fuse but I still have to get confirmation on that. Here’s the dryer info:
KitchenAid Prestige
Model No. KEYS677EQ1
Any help would be appreciated.

That’s a good test for motor start windings. Mine growled loudly but started when it was cold, just growled/hummed during start when hot. Also growled when it would start and run and would also fail intermittently during run. New motor fixed it.

To answer your question, I think clockwise. If it makes some kind of humming noise, be prepared to unplug quickly and try CCW!

Mine does the same thing. Once you help it start(with someone holding the door switch), it runs and dries fine. I’ve had similar experience with tools/appliances/machinery motors that just had a bad starter capacitor that hat to be replaced. Does this one not work that way? Was talking to a retired repair man this weekend an he said they have some kind of centrifugal switch that goes out but can’t be replaced without buying the whole motor. I haven’t actually taken it apart to see what’s really happening with it yet. Thought I would get on here first and see if someone who was familiar with this model and problem could save me a little troubleshooting time. Thanks in advance for any help. cliff

Most likely it’s the motor. sometimes the start switch is just dirty or needs a little lubrication, but most of the time you just need to replace the motor.
