The lights do not indicate on the display when pushing any of the buttons. I removed the electric box cover behind the kick plate and found that the white wire had touched the black power wire. Heat from the black wires in the connector melted the tip of it, fusing the white wire slightly into it. What would this have effected and can it be fixed?

First it should have blown your fuse/breaker i the house panel.
Problem is that when it shorted it probably produced a voltage spike and this often blows the control board.
Check that the control board is getting power, if it is and the unit is still totally dead then odds are the board is shot.
