Difficulty securing wiring to GE heating element replacement WB44X5082 for old GE oven JBS160P1WH. Wires are held to heating element with screws unlike the YouTube video. Should I try washers to get it secured? It heats, but seemed to smoke so turned off

Brand:GE
Model Number:JBS160P1WH
Main Symptom:heating element loose
What happens & when: turned on, and began heating but also smoking. Didn’t have the back plate of heating element attached to oven when tested. Assumed smoking caused by bad connection? Weird that the connection is just shoved back into the insulation.

Hello, if at all possible, I would pull it out and remove the back panel to see what is smoking. There is a lot of heat and voltage flowing through those terminals and I would not alter the design. You want to make sure there is nothing touching in the back to cause a fire. Be careful.
