Does it do this when the tub is empty?

Yes it does. There are no unusual noises or vibration during the cycle loaded or empty. It’s just a very bang when it stops accompanied by a 1/4” shift of the machine

It sounds like either the clutch is weakening or there is a bur causing the brake drive assembly to catch. If you remove the transmission, the brake drum can be inspected for any indications of the brake digging in and catching. If the brake drum does not have any burs or other indicators, the clutch is the likely cause. This link to the clutch has a repair video that can be used as a reference for accessing the brake drum area. 285785 Clutch Assembly | Genuine Whirlpool OEM In Stock
