2002 Whirlpool Gold washer quit agitating and spinning

Main Symptom: Agitator does not engage and tub will not spin
What happens & when: Two weeks ago. It Stopped running and makes a loud noise (buzzing, whining, clicking?) when agitator or tub try to engage. Base of agitator can be turned clockwise and counter clockwise. Top of agitator only turns freely clockwise by itself and if turned counterclockwise the whole agitator turns. I did reach in and turn the coupler and it sounds like the transmission and motor are turning as well. I have not looked to see if coupler is damaged but there are no signs that the rubber part of the coupler is breaking up on the floor or when I turn it. The bottom of the transmission is sticky but only a couple drops of oil had leaked below on the floor.

I’d probably try disconnecting and inspecting that motor coupler AP3963893 and seeing if the motor AP6012887 is turning/spinning/running when engaged. If the motor does run when the coupler is disconnected then I’d doubt a weak motor, usually agitation will at least work a little even if the motor is weak. If both are good then you’ve got probably got something going on in the transmission AP3096209.
