1996 Maytag LAT8016AAE top load washer intermittently will not agitate

What happens & when: Water fills up. When I close the lid, sometimes it will not agitate. When the problem is occuring, the knob will rotate through the cycles, including draining, filling for rinse and drain again.

Today, I want turned the knob to “Spin” and pulled on the knob to activate, and it actually started spinning for the rince/spin cycle. Once it finished, I filled it up and ran another full cycle and it ran all the way through like nothing was wrong. I’m thinking it may be an intermittent switch of some kind, but not the lid switch in my opinion.

Error Code (if any):This is an older model with no display so no error codes.
Parts or tests already tried: Verified that the Knob rotates through the cycle with the lid closed and not with the lid open.

Manually skipped to spin mode and was able to get it spinning once by doing that. The following load of laundry cycled normally after doing that.

Based on what you are telling me, I would lean towards the timer. Sometimes you can wiggle the timer knob and get it to start, if that is the case, the timer contacts are bad and the timer would need to be replaced.

Thank you. That was my thought as well. Hopefully I can find one. Appliancepartspros shows it as unavailable discontinued.
