This really isn't a repair question...The ice "flap" in the door, has been splashed on and abused by 4 teenage boys, for quite some time...It is sticky and gunky and is in desperate need of cleaning... It's sticking open causing some of the ice to melt and then it's refreezing, blocking the ice shoot and preventing ice from being dispenced...how do I take the unit apart to get to the flap to clean it??

Thanks in advance...

I am new to this forum, but I will do my best to help. I have a similar model I am working on for a charity.

first, unplug the power cord from the wall, as you will be working on electrical parts near a water source.

next, you should have a plastic bezel on the outside of the opening. this can be removed by prying on it with your fingers from the inside of the opening. if this doesn't work, use a 2 inch (or wider) metal putty knife on the outside where the plastic meets the metal door. DON'T use a screwdriver!! this will scratch your surface, ding the plastic, and possibly break the bezel.

next, you will see your control panel. it meets a plastic retainer on the back of the water ice control panel. this is a bit tricky, but if you push downward and pull forward (slight pressure forward) it should come off. if not, look where the two pieces meet, and use your putty knife (NOT a screwdriver!) and try to seperate the pieces. once you have that removed, you should have 3 "sets" of wires. the easy way to remember where they go, is the shiny metal side is visible. the other side of the connector is solid plastic, no shiny metal showing. also, they are odd numers on the connectors. 7-pin goes to seven pin, 2-pin goes to 2-pin, etc..

next, remove the piece that the control panel was attached to, the original piece you wanted to clean. get a phillips screwdriver (yes, you can play with your screwdriver now, it's ok) and remove the 4 retaining screws. this piece will come right out. as for the flapper, you just need to pop it out. you may have to figure that one out, but it is easy. clean everything with soap and water. you don't want to use harsh chemicals because some will kill the plastic or rubber. also, don't put the control panel under water, or get it wet. you can wipe it off.

any more questions, let me know
