That does make sense, since the overload in a 3 n 1 has to provide protection for a range of compressor hp ratings (1/12 to 1/5hp). I noticed the relay I need is actually a PTC and not a start relay. This is the same technology a 3 n 1 uses to start the compressor. There seems to be a run cap in the PTC/overload device I'm ordering, so I'm going to remove the 3 n 1, when the part comes in. I've read that some guys remove the start cap in 3 n 1, if the original comp did not have a start cap. I've also read that you can splice the run cap into one of these devices to lessen the strain on the windings. Until now, I never knew that domestic refrigerators even used run caps.

Very good that you are not going to use the 3n1. Just stick with the factory original one, it will be a plug and chug routine replacement. There are NO start capacitors in the modern R134A compressors. Most of the time they use a run capacitor that increases running torq to aid in preventing compressor stall during low line voltage conditions.
