I have a front load Whirlpool gas dryer (lint cleaner on top of the dryer in the top right corner).

In the timed dry cycle, the burner doesn't turn on reliably, and comes on less frequently as the time continues.

In the auto dry cycle, the burner works normally.

My theory is that this could be a bad timer. If it were a bad operating thermostat, the symptoms would be the same on auto dry.

According to the wiring diagram, the auto dry and timed dry have somewhat different connections to operate the dryer.
See inside of your appliance - diagrams and part photos for virtually every model.
