I have an older machine (1990) compact combo unit designed for apartments. I replaced the water valve on the unit because it was making noise when it filled. Now it won't come on. I've unplugged the unit...done the lift the lid 6 times. There must be a physical reset button on this unit. But where????

This is not an electronic controlled machine, there is no reset function. This washer/dryer combo is actually made by Whirlpool for GE. Same as the smaller Whirlpool Thin Twin models. Something must have gotten unplugged in the wiring harness or a wire got broken. Does the dryer still work? Breaker may have tripped, make sure you have power at the receptacle.
