I had the typical "freezer works (bottom drawer) but fridge doesn't" problem. Took off appropriate panels...frosted over w/ some hard ice near the thermostat. Tried to test thermostat by placing in glass w/ ice and water, it never closed so replaced it. After one night coils icing up again. (I hadn't replaced panel and door but taped thick plastic over it). The fan works (observation after ice melted) and the heater coil shows 30 ohms. Besides thermistor what else is there? Not sure how to check a thermistor.
I also detached t-stat and attached test leads to the 2 wires where the voltage should go into it. Plugged fridge back in, no voltage. Should that v+ always be there or does something else enable it, as in the control board?

Here your parts Parts for Whirlpool GB2SHDXTS01 Refrigerator - AppliancePartsPros.comSee the attachment for the tech sheet. I had the typical "freezer works (bottom drawer) but fridge doesn't" problem. I am not sure what you mean by "typical" problem Took off appropriate panels...frosted over w/ some hard ice near the thermostat. Was the frost to the point that the evaporator fan could not pull air through the coils. Tried to test thermostat by placing in glass w/ ice and water, it never closed so replaced it. I am not a fan of placing thermostats in water. If one drop of moisture gets into the thermostat it can screw it up. Just hold the face of the thermostat onto an ice cube to check it. After one night coils icing up again. (I hadn't replaced panel and door but taped thick plastic over it). The evaporator cover must be on for the unit to properly circulate the cold air. Besides thermistor what else is there? Not sure how to check a thermistor. The tech sheet give the resistance spec for the thermistors. run the diagnostics to see if the damper which controls the amount of cold air being pushed into the fresh food section is opening. I also detached t-stat and attached test leads to the 2 wires where the voltage should go into it. Plugged fridge back in, no voltage. Should that v+ always be there or does something else enable it, as in the control board? I am not sure what you are trying to do in the above. With the evaporator coil frozen/frosted try forcing a defrost cycle. If the defrost heater comes on then the defrost heater and thermostat are OK. If you still have a defrost problem then odds are that it is the control board. |

I had replaced the thermostat yesterday. Using the control panel, I forced a defrost and this worked. I went in the Service Test mode to check the tstat. I tread 1 and O(pen). At some point should it show 1 and S(hort)/closed? Wouldn't this prove the tstat is working? I want to button up the freezer but want to be sure it's good.

OK, put the back panel back on and re-ran the diagnostics. On first test for defrost it shows the tstat as S(hort). Now I know the new one works.
REALLY appreciate the help!

All depends how you did the test. That the defrost heater got hot during your forced defrost proves that the defrost thermostat dies close. That it gave a O (open) during the thermostat test proves it does open so I would say that it is OK.
At some point should it show 1 and S(hort)/closed? Yes it should read S (closed) but only if the evaporator coils are frozen at of the start of the thermostat test. After some time the reading should go to O (open) because the heater is turned on during the test and warms up the evaporator coils.
Note that even if the defrost thermostat and heater are OK you may still have a defrost problem due to the control board (jazz). Also even if you can force a successful defrost cycle it does not mean that the control board will automatically program a defrost.
By the sound of it I would say that at least the defrost heater and thermostat are OK in your unit. |

OK, then I'll wait and see if the control board will program the next couple of defrosts.

The thermostat was the problem. Everything buttoned up and working fine for 2 days.
I am telling everyone I know about this site.
Thanks.

I'm back! After everything working fine 11 days I had the same symptoms again yesterday. Warm (56) fridge and cold freezer. W/out removing the back panel, I forced a defrost today which appeared to work as cold air now blows in fridge. Ran through the diagnostics, which show ok. Any ideas? Seems like the control board might be the culprit?? Ouch.
