I have a Maytag Performa. We have had no trouble out of it in over 10 years. However yesterday it started to making a loud noise when it was spinning. I stoped it but later it was restarted in the wash cycle and the noise came back. To get the water out of it I put it on spin cycle and as the water was removed the noise went down. Anyone got any ideas? How do I open this machine up so I can observe what is happening. I saw some information that said there was two clamps holding the top on and you could remove the top by using a putty nife. I want to be sure this is correct before i try this and damage the paint for nothing.

If you insert a screw driver or putty knife about 4 inches from each edge you will release clips that hold the top to the front. The top will lift up and you can take out screws that hold the front panel on. You can also access the pump from the rear service panel.
First check the pump to see if something is caught in it, or something is caught between the tub and basket. If that is okay, operate the machine with the front panel off and see if you can tell where the noise is coming from. You may have a problem with a tub bearing assembly.
